Visit the Burj Dubai -- The Tallest Building in the World

In a monument to what some have called the end of one of modern history's most hubristic bubbles of city development, the Burj Dubai officially opens today. The tallest building in the world, by far, it tops out at 2,684 feet and over 160 stories. That's taller than Chicago's Sears Tower — even if you put the Hancock Tower on top of it. (If you stacked our own lost Twin Towers atop of one another, you'd be just barely looking down to the top of the Burj's glass spire.) It was designed by the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill — the architecture firm also designing downtown's 1 World Trade Center. While Dubai's government-led economy has suffered a humiliating collapse in the past year, and the city's much-hyped (and absurd) real-estate bubble has deflated, about 90 percent of the 1,000 some-odd units have been sold in the new tower, which will include private residences and a hotel by Giorgio Armani.

Housing a staggering 1,000 condos, an Armani hotel, 57 elevators, and a slew of other amenities, the Burj is a symbol of luxury and excess that do not seem in keeping with our sustainable goals or the humble times that the world is currently experiencing. However, there are some notable green features such as an 11-hectare green oasis surrounding the foot of the tower which will be irrigated using an innovative condensate collection system. Condensation from the building’s cooling equipment will be recovered providing an estimated 15 million gallons of water a year – certainly helpful when you’re operating a gigantic tower in the desert.

Forget about any Olympics inauguration ceremonies or any Fourth of July: The Burj Dubai is the tallest building in the world, and it got the highest fireworks too for its opening ceremony. So colossal you'll think they are destroying it.

The tower—which officially is 2717 feet tall (828 meters)—was inaugurated today, and the developers launched it with all they got. The people who attended the ceremony couldn't stop cheering in awe. I don't blame them. Watch the whole video to see the lighting effects just before the final fireworks. They look designed by aliens.

The Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai had its official opening ceremony on Monday although it was hardly a grand unveiling as you cant hide a 828 meter tall building behind a curtain. The Burj Khalifa (also known as the Burj Dubai) is the tallest man made structure ever built and has the world’s fastest elevators which travel at 40 mph. The building is so high that those visiting the top of it’s needle like tower are treated to the kind of views you would only otherwise see on a flight to Dubai.
